Breaking news: I have just received the following information from our Study Abroad main man, Jeff Palis:
Summer 2011 Gilman Scholarships Open to All Majors
The Gilman Scholarship was created by the US Congress to promote study abroad for students with limited financial means. It provides up to $5,000 to students on year-long, semester-long or (for 2011) summer study abroad programs. Students are eligible if they:
1. are receiving the Pell Grant, and
2. have been accepted or have applied to participate in a study abroad program that spends at least 4 weeks in one country.
Because the Gilman was created to promote opportunities for student who would not traditionally study abroad, they also tend to prioritize applications from other underrepresented groups among study abroad programs examining factors such as major, race, and study abroad destination. The University Honors Program advises ALL Georgia Southern students on nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships such as the Gilman. To receive support with the application process, students should:
1. Review the application information regarding the Gilman on their website: http://www.iie.org/en/Programs/Gilman-Scholarship-Program
2. Complete the entire application and submit it to Dr. Francis Desiderio, Assistant Director of the University Honors Program, at francisdesiderio@georgiasouthern.edu, by February 1, 2011.
3. Revise application after receiving comments and submit to the national competition prior to the national deadline of March 1, 2011.
Please note that students may not receive notification of the award status until May or June 2011.
Over the past four years, seven Georgia Southern Students have received the Gilman Scholarship.
This is a GREAT opportunity for all Pell students, not just Georgia Southern! Please check it out! If you are not GSU, you should locate the appropriate person on your campus.
